Here and Now
My puppy sticks her whole
face in the water and blows bubbles
over and over
after our walk around the loop trail
ending in the creek
where we stand in the shade of
hemlocks who are dying from
damage caused by the woolly adelgid,
but Maple doesn’t know that
isn’t aware of catastrophe or worried
for our fate in these coming days.
She just knows how good it feels to
stick her head in the current and let
water wash her senses with joy.

That lucky dog could teach us a thing or two. And you’ve told us the tale with wonderful word choices.
lol, yes! Needed this poem, today! Thank you for sharing Maple!
Thank you for this timely reminder to be “here and now.” Awareness of the moment is emphasized with vivid imagery. There is such presence throughout the poem as perceived through its rhythmical structure to its strong word choice. With a bow of gratitude for sharing this affecting, gracious work. Peace
Well done! I love the movement from “where we stand in the shade of” to “hemlocks who are dying from/damage caused by the woolly adelgid,” You move us to a wider awareness well before your conclusion draws us back in and twists it.
