Highway Shoe
Scuffed canvas, worn sole
laces sprawled across the road.
Such mystery! Where
is its companion? Tell me,
how does this always happen?

You, Chelsie, just wrote the kind of thingy Hemingway played with in a five liner. It totally puts me roadside wondering about a dead body that got hauled away, a kidnapping victim, a drug addict or drunk who stumble fumbled it off during a DWI stop. This is incredible stuff.
Thank you. I don’t think I’ve ever read poetry from Hemingway…will have to look that up!
I don’t think he ever wrote it. But he did write tersely. He is famous for a six word short story.
For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.
Oh yes, I have read that one for sure! I have his complete short stories sitting on my shelf…they have been waiting to be read for a while now! Maybe I’ll bump it up the “to be read” list.
shoelaces sprawling across a highway! i love this image.
Thank you!
It’s one of this universal questions, very finely rendered. Great work, Chelsie!
Thanks!! It is a universal question, isn’t it? So often I see one sad shoe on the road.
Nice tanka with a universal question at its heart: what happened?
Thank you!
I love a good mystery!
Yes!
I agree about Hemingway! Very nice.
Thank you so much!
