Horse Girl
Shy little scrawny
knock-kneed girl
finds brio
on the back of a big grey
mare, falls in love
with the warm animal
musk that clings
to her hands and jeans
from the barn, bits
of hay stuck in her hair,
remnants of soft
dusty beast’s breath.
She feels kinship
with any creature
who would not deny this
world is terrifying
sometimes — she, too, spooks
at her own shadow.
But sensitive beings
are extraordinary
in strength. The horse
teaches her to carry
heavy things
with unmatched grace.

This might be my fave of yours — not only so richly written but it reaches and delivers. Love the lines “She feels kinship / with any creature / who would not deny this // world is terrifying/ sometimes” — such a keen observation. A gorgeous poem.
Thank you… the ending is giving me some trouble and I am not satisfied with it, but I will keep workin’ on it!
Don’t you mess with that ending!
I mean I want the sentiment, I feel like it’s just worded slightly awkwardly? Maybe not.
I agree with Bill the ending works really well
And I will say when I feel as you do I play with the enjambments before I mess with the words or sentiments.
Thanks, Coleman. I have been trying that too…I’m sure eventually I’ll get it somewhere that feels right. I think maybe I don’t like that I say “the horse.” Maybe it should be “in strength, teachers/ of how to carry/ heavy things /with unmatched grace.” I dunno.
Sensitive beings are extraordinary in strength. The horse teaches her to carry heavy things with unmatched grace.
So beautiful and perceptive.
great feel of intimacy with the horse reflecting her own sensitivity, horse sharing its intelligence freely
I really love this–it articulates the connection well and the way this poem ends toward grace is gorgeous
The empathy in this line “world is terrifying
sometimes — she, too, spooks
at her own shadow.”
Yummy.
love the word “brio” and how the poem drips with the smell and feel of the horse barn
Thanks, you all. If the ending is working for others maybe it’s not as awkwardly put as I thought! Appreciate the comments.
I was going to copy/paste my favorite part but I just kept going with the highlighting and realized it was the whole poem. This one gave me chills (of strength). I love it.
I love so much about this – the sounds of musk and stuck. But also the ending!
