In the dream
the old seminary was
completely remodeled with
atriums and a nurses’ station where
an old woman shared her lunch with
a puppy but keeping the brick walls
of course it was Good Friday and I
had to be in the chapel at three
but couldn’t find my corridor
my room to change clothes
even with a guide ‘cause
the signage was useless
hallways changing like Hogwarts
and why were there women
seminarians especially
the one who sat next to me
with legs touching
so that we would
inevitably
kiss?

your dream hums along
until the titillating ?
And isn’t that the way of dreams? They so often turn on a unique event…
I love the form you have used with this poem. It’s like a chunk of plaster from the seminary wall. It communicates a discombulated sense. The surprise ending is a wowzer.
Good image, Linda…I think the form just happened, but as
I saw it emerging, I worked it a bit. Thanks…
Amazing how the poem achieves the surrealism of a dream what with the fluid setting, disorientation, and especially shortening lines.
The confusion of change – so best told as a dream. I love how this turns and old ways confused and suddenly the taboo is in your hand – or touching legs – “so that we would inevitably kiss”
Agree with above comments! Great poem.
“hallways changing like Hogwarts” is the dreamiest line.
I think that stream of consciousness conveys the dream sequence well. It sounds like the old seminary is now the new seminary with women and sex. Very biblical.
I agree with the others: the form is an interesting and effective way to frame this poem and I also enjoy the poem portrays the disorienting nature of dream
Shaun, along with others, I find dreams a rich poetic source. The trick is finding some universal themes that work in a poem. Thanks to all for the comments.
Brilliant, just brilliant!
Such is the way of dreams:
the signage was useless
hallways changing like Hogwarts
I especially love “with legs touching
so that we would
inevitably
kiss? “
