Know it or Not
“Whether we…know it or not,… Nature is party to all our deals
and decisions, and she has more votes”
Wendell Berry
Pretty blooms are gone,
last of the dry heads gathered.
Anonymous work,
nonetheless it’s rewarding
to care for the only earth.
Tend, even pretend
reciprocal hope and peace.
Each day rise and vote.
Every harvest remember
save the best seeds for sowing.

Tend, even pretend – oh friend Coleman “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
This poem sends a profound message. Message received!
Love this, and Wendell Berry.
Everyday rise and vote.
Yes
Damn! I love this, Coleman. Spare, direct, motivated and beautiful. And Berry’s epigraph is so on point. One of the better poems of the month, and yet more proof that one need not write a lot to say a lot.
Agree with Lee. You have economy with words that pack a punch in this one!
Love:
Every harvest remember
save the best seeds for sowing.
there is no more meaningful work than the anonymous work
“The only earth” really punched me!
Yes, that “the only earth” hit hard, as did “Every day rise and vote.” I hear you.
I look forward to your poems that speak of your relationship with nature and I too agree that this line hits big— “to care for the only earth.”
Thank you for your poem.
Gorgeous, Coleman. The brevity and conciseness here—mwah!
