Leaning on the Spade
Notes to myself—
Check word choice & syntax
from Papa Hemingway’s SAR
for matador poem.
Review Ariel & Daddy stuff.
Am I stripping enough veneer
off the reality?
Lighthouses & Fear make
uncomfortable combinations
but great imagery.
Sexton. London. Wallace. Berryman.
I shouldn’t be this comfortable in the dark.
But when I re-read them, they shake
the grip of the earth and live again.

Definitely a few of my favorites. And if you’re speaking of being comfortable in the dark, how about some Kunitz
Love this poem! Amazing what we thing about when we should be working. I will eagerly await the matador poem.
Should be “think about.” Thinking about your poem while typing just shows I can’t do two things at once!
Great poem and I identify!
Seamus Heaney, too? I dig it, Bernie. They shake the grip of the earth—just wonderful!
I love Heaney! But he didn’t make this because unlike everyone else mentioned here, he didn’t commit suicide.
Love it, sir.
Necromantic editing, indeed!
