LETTERS TO THE DEAD: 18, 19, 20
Trio (of Brothers-In-Law)
18) 6/18/2018
for G.H. (1953 – 2006)
From the road we see
you beside the dogwood tree,
your shadow our shade
19) 6/19/2018
for L.C. (1936 – 2015)
The fulcrum you are
the pivots you make
…….the quiet middle
Of everything
20) 6/20/2018
for R.B. (1961 – 2017)
“shirt off your back
sandals off your feet”
we look at each other, each
waiting to do what the other
wishes not to do

exquisite
pristine
beautiful
I could read this, and, as a student of your wonderful work, assign weights to the lengths and timings of it this month, perhaps earn a Masters with my thesis comparing my assignation of selected parameters of relative importance. if I was going to do that I might have searched the last stanza quote, thinking Dylan but finding nothing but Matthew, which, as you might imagine, is rich fodder indeed for poetical critique and comparicrashtation but it was the 2nd verse “You are the fulcrum” got me the best and some things, even imaginary Master’s degree parameters, can be measured.
Since I didn’t write what I meant to say
…some things cannot, ….. , be measured.
we all appreciate your enthusiasm, Steve.
I’m afraid OWW has turned a prose work into a poetry human
“the quiet middle of everything” Wow! I have been so enjoying these poems. Unique and powerful!
A trio of breaths and prayers. These are heavy yet light.

Small tight verses.
