Love Poem to A Rest Stop Off I-70
The nights smudged like chalk, foggy
on the unfamiliar mountain. You waited
in cars, lit by the blueglow of some screen.
In this city far from home, still you smoked
in convenience store parking lots, while
three miles away, the lucky
slept secure. You’d always envied
their split-
level mortgage and their
families, their cozy half-acres.
