My relationship with my pump
We’ve been together over twenty years now.
I used to keep you clipped to my waistband
then in my pockets but you would fall out easily.
Now I wear you close to my heart in my bra
night and day. We’re only separated when I
shower. You’re not waterproof. The thing about
this closeness is you beep when I’m high or
low, when your cartridge gets below 20 units,
when you stop the insulin flow for some
unknown reason and you do this night or
day interrupting my sleep, conversations
or whatever. But when they took you away
from me in hospital deciding they knew
BEST giving me multiple shots instead
Putting my blood sugars on a roller
coaster. I was livid wanting you back!

I love how you personified your insulin pump and reinforced how we know our own bodies.
thanks!
A love poem to your pump! Brilliant!
and yes! to: I was livid wanting you back!
Ode to the pump! Yes! The pump deserves to be named and written about.
It’s a good relationship. 🫂
My favorite element of this poem is the apiatrophe, the way you address the pump directly. Have you considered establishing that in the title, e.g. “To My Pump” or “Dear Pump”?
*apostrophe
Good idea!
Wel, Linda…Been there, done that my hubby remarked about your poem! Yes, hosp said & did the same to me with my pump! We got to where we now REFUSE to hand it over! Will not! We ask immediately for the Diabetes Educator to come (& she’ll likely be wearing a pump! Once they even took it, they said, to “a safe across the street.” Wow, did i panic over that! God bless you. I’ve had Type 1 for 65 years.
I’ve had it for 43! Had surgery at St.Joe Main last April for spinal fusion c4-c7 and they took it away. Said that was their rules,! So frustrating. So many don’t know the difference between Type 1 and 2! You know the struggle! Thanks for your comment!
Linda, st. Joe’ a nightmare for me. Took 10 yrs but i’m fused spine bottom thru T1. Also have both shoulders, both knees, 2 each hand carpel tunnels, & dozen retina laser treatments. And i was a good, compliant patient. Haha don’t you love that description!?
yes! I was on the other side for 26 years as an occupational therapist and hate being a patient! had 8 eye surgeries and retina laser treatments as well. Diabetes is a thief!
Don’t know what we’ve got til it’s gone…
