Outpost Estill County: Year 3
I’ve learned to trim the poison ivy along the fence row
like a hedge
to globe the Johnson grass outbreaks on the lawn and leave the
ambitious
polk weeds standing to find their architectural
red glory.
I found topiary forms of deer and rabbit to
caramelize
the rage and heat and defeated conceits of suburban
garden green.

Very nice imagery, and I liked your use of stanza structure.
Oh I love this
This sings quite nicely. I agree about the use of stanza structure. It’s unusual and I think it works. Great to see you here Jules.
Terrific details and actions. Using “globe” as a verb is brilliant.
Love the internal rhyme of the last couplet! And the verb “caramelize” is terrific!
Love it but… are those topiary forms what I think they are? 😉
I like how you shaped this on the page and was pulled in by this beginning:
I’ve learned to trim the poison ivy
I read this earlier and neglected to comment though it moved me.
Rage and heat of defeated conceits
Sounds great!
The last two lines are especially gripping me though I dont understand the second to last, I still get a real feeling from the shapes of the words.
