Riffing Off Charlie Parker
If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn — Charlie Parker (attributed)
What exactly am I living
when I am playing music
out of my horn, just the way
Bird told it, according to
some, while according to
others, maybe the words
of Bird I carry around with me
were never his to begin with,
and ain’t that just like a bebopper
like Charlie Parker
to lift something from someone else
and riff it into your own as a bit
of theft, and all I’m left with here
to play with is the possibility
that we need to live our days
like stories like song
like improvisational poetry

This is a super-cool riff. I like how you take the emphasis off Charlie Parker and place it more in the universal flow.
Thanks, Linda. Appreciate the read and the comment

Would you have a Miles Davis without a Charlie Parker? Jazz is the most American invention. It grows and changes as it passes by/over/through/between each one of us.
amen
Got hooked with the first line, and the remaining poem did not disappoint. We all use inspiration and shape that into us.
Nicely done!
Apparently today’s task is coming along after Linda’s responses and muttering, “I agree with her!” 😂
Like a good cover, you touch on Parker just enough to honor the original, and just little enough to make it wholly your own.
Love the language, dig the meaning with a huge “Yes!”
