scales
running from the soft, the scared, the lonely.
these inhibitions turned into these lines so these
hard men and women could—so
you might understand.
sweetness i feel soft and scared, and
nothing but trouble to you.
i crane my neck, feel the soft spot, the scale!—
pulled back from my dragon’s side,
and jump! a lone arrow from the heart of
you brings my demise.
then, in danger of shedding all my pride, and
crushed, because he’s not enough
when you say you love my mind,
i hide, openly, in between these lines.
running running from the soft, the scared, the lonely.

“when you say you love my mind,
i hide, openly, in between these lines.” This! Best couplet I’ve seen this summer.
Bernard, that was very kind of you to say. Thank you!
What Bernard said. I kept reading and rereading this.
It’s an honor to know. Thank you Linda!

I really like this imagery of the dragon seeming to have forgotten there is a soft spot, and then it becomes painfully aware…but there is nothing to be done about it. The arrow is in flight.
I’ve had that precise feeling more times than I could count. Suddenly realizing “not safe, not safe.” You wrote another line for the poem Jane. …..there is nothing to be done about it. The arrow is in flight. Thank you.
love your concluding line

manny, you have scored a victory with this one…
honored sir
