She’s a Small Town Girl
Blink and you’ll miss it
how the sun lights up downtown streets
and how women with tattoo sleeves saunter through antique shops.
You don’t get to see the ghost footprints
Not like I do.
How new houses become new prisons.
Every second a stifling reminder of what you can’t have
So you drive away screaming,
leaving me standing in the driveway.

Coming from a small town myself, the images you use endear me to the setting. That’s really hard to do, seeing as though I hardly visit my hometown anymore. Well constructed and beautiful!
That second stanza is a well crafted piece of magic. Great work!
I have unrequited memories of a small town girl and a poem with your same title.
