Summer Creatures
They go out in the heat
Slender forms congregating under a welcome sun
They have waited for this sticky sweat of summer
For the solace of water, for the evening feasts
I watch them with uncertainty
Blue face lit by the bug zapper on my neighbor’s back porch

great detail blue face lit by the bug zapper
Great “s” sound repetition in the first two couplets, great turn with the bug zapper. Nice & concise.
Beautiful language in this little poem. Love the alliteration of “s” in the first and second verse. Love it that you are not condeming or judging the bugs (and other critters) but you are honest too.
I really liked how personified the skeeters are in this piece. “the solace of water.” It’s funny to me. Then, the slightest note of apprehension as you watch them “with uncertainty.”
Beware the “evening feasts” of these creatures! Lively and perfect for this time of year.
