Text not Sent
shattered screen.
A Soul in exchange
life sacrificed.
The text not sent
phone call made.
The weight of eternity
fate of a moment.
The shifting of eyes
A single inattention.
Was it worth it?
Was it worth it?
The mother cried.

This hits home as I have a teenage driver whom I am constantly preaching to about using a phone while driving. I am amazed every day at how many people I see speeding down the highways with their noses in their phones! Your poem shows both sides of the story in a very powerful way.
Thanks Jennifer. I based this off a fatal EMS call I worked a few years ago, what struck me most was the broken phone within arms reach of the victim. I don’t want to stir unneeded emotions in already stressed parents but that scene left an impression on me; the senseless dependence we feel to our phones.
Wow this should make all of us think about all that we do. Is it worth it? Amazing job capturing this!
