The Coach’s Wife
Knows the rules, the count, the score, the plays, the calls.
Knows what happened
and what the coach
thinks happened.
Knows this is a subtle
and essential difference.
The story and the facts.
The man and his myth.
The woman and the sharp
truth of the backwards K
written in the book she knows
how to keep, immaculately.

‘the story and the facts’. 🙂 ‘the woman and the sharp truth’ 🙂
Love your writing, thanks.
Wendy picked a great line but I do love this too:
Knows this is a subtle
and essential difference
What a delicately delicious poem.
I spent years scorekeeping little league baseball when I was in my teens, and can vouch that this poem reads both nostalgic and very, very true. Miss those days.
great ending with “immaculately”
It does go to show the things people can pick up from each other just via close proximity. And makes me wonder for this poem how much more the wife really knows than she’s telling.
Love the space left between what she sees and what she will choose to share
