The Why of Last-Minute Lima, OH
It’s not a metropolis
and there ain’t much
here: In this Jeep,
lying in a makeshift cradle,
seats down, blankets strewn,
pillows bunched with sweat
trickling down a body
like gutters without room
for legs, trying to sleep
I can’t see any stars outside
the glass. They must not like
the light from the Taco Bell sign
any more than I do.
Four hours drive from home;
three hours /with/ before
eight /without/ until
a full day /with/ and
having to leave
again.
It’s not a metropolis
and there ain’t much
here
but you were.
You were.

This a great poem! Fantastic description. The title is informative and clever. The poem is concise and original. Bravo!
Thank you, Linda!!
Love gettin’ your read and comments!
I’m slow to the draw this year. Everyone is writing great stuff including you!
💙 Welcome back then!
Love how this ends. Very nicely done!
Thank ya, Bill!
love: “lying in a makeshift cradle,”
and the companionable humor in:
“I can’t see any stars outside/the glass./They must not like
the light from the Taco Bell sign/any more than I do.
Thank you, Pam!
My fave line in a terrific poem re: the stars (Pam! you too!)
They must not like
the light from the Taco Bell sign
any more than I do.
This one has a beat / Nichols thing man. Loved it.
Thank ya, Manny!
I wasn’t sure if that line would throw it out 😂 But I was laying there trying to sleep with that visual audacity in my face 😂
Such a clearly rendered piece full of emotion. I agree with others that keeping the Taco Bell sign was a good and grounding decision
Thank you, Shaun 🙏
