The Therapist Said You Were A Net
your lover’s body got caught in,
called your lover the sooty,
soothing ground of your burial.
Your tongues became three-piece suits,
all stiff and unexpressive, I mean,
and your breaths floated somewhere
so far away you thought
you’d never catch it.

“Your tongues became three-piece suits,

I really love the understatement in these powerful metaphors.
Yes, the metaphors at the end are fantastic!
I like the way NET
is something to embrace
as a safety net,
and something not to be caught in as a butterfly or
“breaths floated somewhere
so far away you thought
you’d never catch it.”
Yes to all of this!! I’m speechless.
Your tongues became three-piece suits,
all stiff and unexpressive,
Great lines.
Thanks. I like those lines, too. So much that I keep trying to write the right poem for them. Tomorrow will be my third straight attempt — a third poem with some version of that image in it.
‘so far away you thought you’d never catch it’ Love that ending.
Wonderful and fresh metaphors, Tom. And intriguing that you keep working with those lines to fit them “just right” into a poem. Good advice for all of us!
