The Town
On the one side of the road
there was the town
and on the other, a mountain
the road sliced like a loaf of bread
longwise, and whatever it was beyond,
I never thought too much about,
nor about the river behind me
or where it went when it left us.

Tall slender rainstorms walk slowly
against gray cloud along the far verge.
The ocean is green where the river empties.
