This Land, Our Land (with thanks to Stevie Wonder)
I just called to say I Love You
I just called to say how much I care
I called and left a message
For a fellow friend of the environment
Just to let him know I care
The Supreme Court
That group that makes decisions
Sets precedence for all of us
They passed a ruling today 6-3
We can no longer regulate
The carbon output of pollution emitting companies
In the throes of massive worldwide climate change
After a boyhood in nature
It’s time to take a stand for the land
For each other, our children
I mean it
From the bottom of my heart

I wish I could say I was surprised by the Supreme Court’s newest strike against what we hold dear. Your poem has such a mournful tone, but also twinges of hope and determination in “It’s time to take a stand for the land/for each other, our children.” Let us all care for our beautiful world no matter what opposition we face. Thank you for sharing this and all your wonderful work this month!
An amazing response to the news of today–to personalize it and and to connect it with Stevie Wonder’s intention to tell someone you care—before there is nothing left to care about. I am impressed that you are able to use your transformative ability as an artist to address the environmental distress this Supreme Court decision delivers. Thank you for caring and thank you for your poem!
“It’s time to take a stand”–true for everyone but especially for poets and other artists who can reach into hearts and minds
