Two Squirrels
spiraling up a tree,
two squirrels jump into
a mass of mauve leaves,
last night’s rain shaking off
in a shower of droplets
they are free, dull, happy
content to chase one another
unaware that our
burning fate may come
more quickly than we want
but for now I will enjoy
this afternoon, the sun is out
and I am pulling down the universe
into my hands, crafting prisms
and shooting visions
through them

Love the “mauve leaves” shower the squirrels jumped into. Love the couplet at the end. I was watching a squirrel this morning–cross the street, climb up one tree, jump over to another, and hop on the roof where I lost sight of the squirrel.
I really love “pulling down the universe into my hands” — Thanks for that great dose of optimism!
I guess it’s kind of an existentialist thing: if there’s no optimism than where does that leave you?
Ugh the grammar. How do you edit comments lol
ugh, effin’ squirrels. ransacking our attic as i type… filthy vermin, each and every one and truly undeserving of a poem as nice as this one!
