Unfinished Book Series
for Doug
My friend reminded me that we
had begun reading a book series
together, years ago, and are still
waiting for that last book.
We talked about the main character
like we talked about a friend who
moved away a long time ago, who
doesn’t update social media anymore
but still hasn’t deleted it. We stare
at his outdated profile pic, the one
of him smashed at the concert,
shortly before he dropped out.

I love your effortless transition from reminiscing about the book series to remembering your old friend.
Maybe I didn’t make something clear in the poem—the old friend is the main character of the book series
I love the tone in many of your poems. It’s truthful and has a ironic and whimsical edge. There’s this unsaid implication in the poem that you have more in common with your friend than you’d like to admit. Or maybe it’s just my reading. There’s something very existential but oddly loving about this poem.
Thank you so much for this comment and for your reading of my poems as a whole!
Love how this one ends. That image is just right!
