If I Had a Boat
The one good thing about California
(I said what I said)
Is the ocean.
Vast, unending,
(Ineffable, divine)
I watch the boats.
Motor. Fishing. House. Life.
Take the people away
from the shore and into
The open water,
Where who knows what could happen.
In the distance,
Lyle Lovett waves, happy.
I am not a sailor.
But I could learn.

*ineffable, divine, is a nudge to Stephen Crane’s Poem “I Stood Musing…” and this title is a Lyle Lovett song

I like the wistful tone, the short stanzas.
A charming and very concise poem. And in my book Lyle Lovett can do no wrong.
Well, you had California and Lyle Lovett and a lovely poem, so what is there not to love? I grew up on Lake Michigan and spent a lot of time staring at the water and “musing.” Something so magnetic about water. Nicely done!
We’re all in the same boat concerning Lyle Lovett (ha! unintentional connection but I’ll take it). You all are very encouraging -thank you
