We Descend from Clouds
after Andrew Merton’s “Evidence that We Are Descended from Chairs”
1.
Sadness is a cloud that travels in the air.
2.
Clouds make shadows edging over gardens.
3.
Dr. Jung worked with his shadow.
4.
I celebrate and live in his shadow. It keeps my dahlias in bloom.
5.
At this moment,
my gratitude is for sadness,
where all desperation is a gift.

I love the minimalism of this. All the white space. Your statements make sense.and are provocative. I especially like the fourth one! So much work achieved with
single sentences.
You would like Andrew Merton’s poet, It’s at Accents Publishing, the book is titled the same as the poem whose structure inspired this.
I mean Merton’s book. Book, book, book.
#4 is my favorite, too. The final is a statement of deep truth.
thank you Bill
I agree with Linda. You say so much with these careful lines.
I agree with all of you. All of you are grate.
I love the title, that each line floats between the numbers, and the power in each line, especially, #4 and # 5
But 4 and 5 would not be possible without all that was before.
Yes, you are most correct, Manny!
For me, to use your beautiful and powerful poem as an image, I breathe in the cloud of sadness and travel to the shadows that edges gardens (so much mystery and promise here once embraced and unlocked) and work like Jung to bring all of me home.
My favorite entry is #3. (I’m fascinated by Jung’s work.)
I love the minimalism, the well-crafted lines. The title pulled me into the poem before I got to the poem! Then that last three lines — wow. Thank you so much for sharing this (rather Jungian!) poem.
This is easily my favorite poem of yours this month, Manny. The concision, the control, the subtle emotions subtly conveyed—absolute perfection.
I like these spare poems! Well done.
