What Do You Expect
Gabriel, my nephew, is 15 months old.
In 459 days, this life is all he has known.
In 4 weeks he went from mostly crawling
To almost running. When he sees me,
He stands up and walks forward, expecting
To be the world in my arms. This is what
he’s learned. When you cage children,
what do you expect to teach them?

This is a wonderful poem. Thank you for it.
I love “expecting/To be the world in my arms”
the brevity makes this poem that much more powerful. wow!
what a turn!
