What Will We Build?
What will we build
as this place crumbles?
How do we repair
when we only wield hammers?
Replacing shattered panes
is an act of trust.
We divide our common space
into smaller rooms,
then spend the days
pounding on the walls.
Can we build with hope
while we buttress our fears?
Will we pass down a place
our descendants must abandon?

Yes, the hammers are the problem!
Yes, this is THE question of our time. Great verbs, great imagery.
Love the use of questions in this poem! Especially when it feels like answers are alluding us! Strong verbs are very effective in conveying urgency!
Wonderful poem, wish I’d written it. How true replacing panes of glass is an act of trust
