When I leave you…
I’m a terrible father.
When I drop you off at your mother’s house,
I’m a failure.
The frustration zooms out from my mouth,
you’re not responsible for the verbal slips lopping off my lips.
Passing on aggression
Pardon me—wrong word.
Passing on a legacy of inadequacy:
As man.
As dad.
As human.
Truth be told—
I simply want to cry to prove to you that I truly am bold.

Wow.
This is a tough one to read, really feel for the voice of the poem. Certainly can relate.
Felt every frustrated word.
Heartrending, Doug.
Beautifully vulnerable. The speaker deciding to break the cycle at the end is very hopeful. Thank you for sharing.
Such honest in your poetry. That is what makes it so powerful!
Only the best fathers reflect so deeply. Nice writing, Douglas.
