WHEN SHE OPENED THE BOX SHE WAS FULL OF EXCITATION
Pandora
did not open
the box
without reason.
When
was curiosity a fatal attraction?
Day after day
she performed the same duties:
up at dawn—do the laundry,
sort the lentils.
All
she wanted
was to read
Edith Hamilton,
understand
her place in the world, t
the context
of her existence.
She had no interest
in weaving
and
unweaving
until her husband came home,
ready for supper.
She had no interest
in living
in the dark.
What she wanted
was to defy
instruction.
She didn’t care
about
blood
on the egg.

Someone in hot pursuit of freedom, with the last couplet audibly making me go AHHHHHH! It’s an engaging poem, and the choice of structure was almost like–
thought > afterthought and sometimes afterthought > new afterthought…. I felt it a Mind Map. Lovely stuff.
So many incredible lines, but that ending is superb.
Wow! Yes, I agree with Shaun about the ending! The form had me zigging and zagging inside her emotion. Wonderful poem!
First of all, I love the Excitation in the title! Choice word.
Second, this is one to read and re-read and put up on the wall!
