E. High St. & Clay Ave.

It is okay to jaywalk here.
Look both ways, of course.
Cross Clay on the north side,
even if you’re grabbing a gyro.
Here you’ll find my favorite porch.
She is quite small, but full of character.
This year, the hibiscus is replaced with
raspberries. I’ve never seen birds in
the bowl that serves as bath.
The bowl is pink. It rivals my frog bowl,
picked up at the Woodland Art Fair for
the same birds who ignore me.
I stop here, at the altar.
To pay my respect to the woman who
cares for the corner. To honor the effort
gone into this home. And to grieve with the
weeping evergreen.

Another sad love poem

When I look at you

When I look into your eyes

My heart aches

In this way

As if my chest will explode

But it tightens

Muscle bound up around heart

Breath hitched at the lowest part of

Of my throat

Like stone holding back

Like a dam

The mastery of desire

Of pleasure

Of pure yearning

Because I’m afraid

Of how much more intense

Your fingers would feel

Not just grazing against mine

When I reach you something

Or when I tap your elbow

Because I fear

The way I would want you to touch me

Would be far greater a sensation

I’ve ever had from another

And that my heart would

Make my eyes grow wild

and that a frenzy

Of desire would connect

My aching heart to yours

Sarah

Curled up like a cat
in the bottom right corner of my heart she lies.
Sweet like a blueberry
and bright like the sun.
A warm prescence in my arms
a forehead for my lips
to brush against.
Goodnight.
I love you.

Some Thoughts on Spring Rain

The rain came for a short time before sunset
Just enough so we don’t need to water the plants.

The rain came after thunder announced its arrival
A cool breeze ushered the dark clouds out of the sky

The rain came but it did not stay long
There is still drought, the river is still low.

We humans need to pay more attention.

There is still drought, reservoirs are almost empty
The rain does not stay long.

The cool breeze after a shower clears the air,
But the rain does not stay long.

Soon we’ll have to water the plants
Because the rain does not stay long.

When people admire you
they can all feel equally small
odd for a flower

Gaming With You

We pick up where we left off

in a virtual world

we haven’t visited in years.

Here, our avatars can be whatever we want.

I’m a princess.

We snack and play for hours.

We take on enemies

we can barely defeat

and wonder why we do this

to ourselves.

It reminds me of

playing video games all night

during sleepovers

with my closest friends

as a teenager.

We have our own language

and inside jokes.

You are my best friend

and we’re fighting evil together.

It feels so good

to wear pink

and look feminine

even if it’s just in a game.

Here, we can control our fate.

Good always triumphs.

We get to re-fight the battles we lose.

It’s a safe place to get lost in.

You tell me,

“I’m going to kill the monkey before bed.”

It’s the type of thing only a gamer girl would say.

Tonight, I will dream of other worlds,

content knowing I’m a princess

to at least one person.

Wedding Perfume

Your wedding perfume lives at my house
It ended up in my bag somehow
I’m keeping it safe next to my jewelry box upstairs

Someday I hope you’ll come back for it

I don’t want that bottle and its gold cap
to be one more thing in my room that reminds me
of something I lost or cannot yet have

 Freedom

Let Freedom Ring
Let it ring so loud
It bursts the sound barrier
That it reverberates back to a time when
It was okay to disagree without being seen as a threat
Where freedom of speech was free
Where you could vote an absentee ballot without being accused of election fraud

Let Freedom Ring
For All Americans
Not just the 1%  – the haves, while
The 99% bare the burden and suffer the haves

A few years ago, was the 60th Anniversary of Dr. King’s march on Frankfort
We united as one, noting how far we’d come, but
Acknowledged, we still had work to do

I sit here confused
In shock
As I witness our forward motion,
Momentum
Halted and reversed
Freedoms being reduced and
Removed
