I was always good
at being alone, loved
solitude’s private refreshment.
Now, all of us alone, together,
slip into each other’s cocoons
on Zoom and Skype, FaceTime,
Facebook Live, our spaces
no longer singular and unseen,
compete for who is doing isolation best,
who’s most content, whose
flowers bloom the most, who
takes the greatest photographs
of the most golden
sourdough bread, whose dog
evokes the sharpest mix
of loyalty and pathos or cat
epitomizes cat, who has built
the most ingenious outdoor space,
best backdrop from which to maintain
our incessant unrelenting
connectedness, the genuine
expression of human lack
of boundaries,
this enforced separation
has laid bare

Great descriptions & line breaks!
Great insight!
Leatha – You nailed it. My Zoom space is in front of a closed door, but I always felt guilty not having a fantastic bookcase or flower arrangement or art work behind me. Sometimes the efforts on FB inspire me, sometimes bum me out.
Absolutely love this poem! As Linda said, it’s very insightful, and an interesting look into how we all handle this time differently.
You nailed what so many of us introverts have been thinking through this quarantine. Thank you!
Great description of how it feels in quarantine
“I was always good . . .” I thought I was too, but I had no idea how many do not like alone and must resort to the artificiality of Zoom, Facebook, Skype, It takes many strokes apparently.
Connectedness starts out as an empathetic concept, but then human nature steps in and the competition begins!! It would be laughable if there wasn’t that ugly undertone. I love this poem and it’s lament for lost privacy!
