Witness
The sea and my endless longing,
washing up again and again
on the softening shore.
Rhythmic shush of the waves, milky
moonlight spills all around me
from a star-soaked sky
as I look out over the water, know my own
smallness in light of its vast, churning
power. The sea looks up
at the stars, knows it is only a drop
in an ever-expanding cosmos.
Just the two of us tonight,
water and woman, each witness to the other,
our soft bodies humming with improbable
life. The waves—roaring, rushing
heartbeat of the earth—echoed somewhere beneath
my skin. There is no end or beginning to the
fragile wonder of what we are.

Okay, this was magic.
Visual and otherwise.
Enough so that I am ending my reading on this one for the night.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to read it! Glad you enjoyed it!
One feels the ebb and flow of the sea. Tercets a good choice for form.
Thank you, Mary! I trust your judgement on form!
Luscious imagery! Love the progression from your “endless longing” to the vast rhythm of the sea to the enormous reaches of the universe – all echoing beneath your skin. It seems like a transformative moment that you have captured with great beauty.
Thank you so much, Kathleen! June would still be a lovely treat if it were only your poems on the site! I so enjoy your work!
I was intoxicated. Especially:
our soft bodies humming with improbable
life. The waves—roaring, rushing
heartbeat of the earth—echoed somewhere beneath
my skin.
