Gas Prices
There are times when
the cost of our journey
our progress
our daily trek
our venture out of darkness
our return home
is higher than times before
We may try to make the trip shorter
or not as fast
or we may coast down the hills
but once we’re at the bottom
there’s another hill to crest
and we have to keep the pedal pressed
and know this is when the engine
works hardest and uses
the most of our fuel
We think how hard it is
to make it this time
and hope we have enough in us
to fill the tank again

Love this! Wow! The form the cadence the metaphor the everything. Subtle perfection.
Great poem Bill.
I agree with Coleman. I like how accessible this poem is too.
So much music in this, I especially liked … “but once we’re at the bottom
there’s another hill to crest”.
I feel you. Btw, I keep thinking there’s an upside to this high gas price thing: that maybe we’ll drive less, which is better for the planet. I hope there’s a metaphor there, too.
What a perfectly great poem this is —-and to greet me today especially! It feels so clearly written…And with ease I can go with it from start to finish and identify with the “ cost of our journey”..all so well knit together with other factors. Thank you so much!
Reminds me of a race we have here in the hills. The first mile sends you down a steep hill as you grunt back up to continue the course for two more miles. Talking about the cost of gas, know this one first hand especially in costume at the Bay to Breakers. But now we are all being broken open at the pumps there is a crying need for ONE LOUD VOICE!!!! thanks for your piece got me to thinkin’
Life is a long drive sometimes. Great poem!
