The Best Company
Who creates these xeriscaped dreams where
everyone clutches their change purse of plans?
I ride my bike for miles through aisles
in the store where everything is bought.
I look for a friend, would settle for a fiend,
but find I’m meant and blessed to be alone.
Silence always has the most to say.

A poignant reflection on the challenges of finding meaning and connection in a world that focuses on material possessions and superficial relationships. Really enjoyed this one!
And then there was LexPoMo… and now you’ll never be alone again! 🙂
Really liked this one, Mike. Sweet little before + after vibe with the “change purse of plans”.
Amen, brother.
Well done Mike!
Thanks for a new to me word ” xeriscape,” Mike, and for “clutches their change purse of plans,” an image/metaphor I’ll remember for a while
Wonderful attention to language in this one, Mike.
I enjoyed your book, by the way. Loaned it to a graduate student.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the book!
I love the way the words play:
I ride my bike for miles through aisles
in the store where everything is bought.
I look for a friend, would settle for a fiend,
but find I’m meant and blessed to be alone.
So happy to be reading Mike poems again! I’m with Gaby about learning a new word. The first two lines grab us around the heart and pull us in. You have such a wonderful relationship with words and putting them in the right places. PS As a mother, I would advise you not to go looking for fiends.
Silence has the most to say… yes. this.
I like the language play, Mike, but I also get this feeling about our world—clutching their change purse of plans, yes.
