Book Report
Scholastic Books delivery day,
from first grade through sixth–
my order, the thickest stack,
my eyes wide as teacher
sat them down on my
wooden desk
colourful covers,
the feel of the pages,
the sound they made as I turned them,
the smell of a new book,
the weight in my hands
the joy of reading the title
and studying the cover–
guessing what stories lay inside
I would spend time holding
each new book, examining the spine
and guessing how many pages
soon, my arm shoots into the air,
and I look up
(the teacher, already looking
at me, knowing this was coming)
Uhmm…Mrs. Spurlock, when do we get our next book club flyers so we can pick some more?

Yesss! Who didn’t love Scholastic book orders?!
Indeed–one of my favorite recurring joys in my childhood! I remember many arguments with my mother because I checked sooooo many books on the slip. Fortunately, she spoiled me!
Thank you, Chelsie!
Great memory, detail and movement.
Thank you, Linda!
This poem really takes me back! Thanks for the details. Well done!
I’m glad–thank you, Linda!
Wonderful memory.
Thank you, Karen!
So relatable–and well-rendered–all for the love of books.
Thank you, Shaun!
Yes – brings back memories. I remember so many of them, too!
Thank you, Nancy!
Yes!, especially to “Uhmm…Mrs. Spurlock, when do we get our next book club flyers so we can pick some more?”
Thank you so much, Pam!
Yes, enjoyable memories!
The toughest part was deciding how to allocate the always too meager budget.
Indeed! I remember some titles I could not get in a particular order, and they did not reappear. Thank you, Bud!
