Taking a Bath
All the birds have ignored
the new glass birdbath
for over a week. Why
did I fill it this morning?
The sparrow bathes in the dirt
left bare beside the sunflowers.
Better to top off our cars. Our
strategic reserve is going to red-
line, then prices will soar.

Thanks to my life partner, Erik, for shaping the literal landscape of this poem.
And for giving me most of the last stanza in a text yesterday.
The birds chirping in my own backyard are providing the most beautiful soundtrack to this one
Awww, that’s wonderful to hear.
Thank you.
Amen! The truth hurts.
Appreciate you.
oh is that why the gas is low again. good to know
Always a reason.
Nice leap from the nearby to the global. We need these connections to the real world.
Thank you.
We gotta know.
Love all the elements you bathe us in! And that hanging “Why”!
Thank you for pointing out that Why!
It was important that each line start and end the way it did.
But now I’m a little spooked by how significant that move really was!
Agree with Sylvia on the hanging why!
These words say volumes:
The sparrow bathes in the dirt
left bare beside the sunflowers.
The birds love their dirt baths!
And we’re trying– again — to grow sunflowers.
