the memory melody
the memories do not dance in my head
until someone hums the first notes of their tune,
then they float through- tip toeing, tip tapping
in rhythms and melodies that don’t quite match together
they pirouette and arabesque-
i try to catch up with them,
but their dance too quick, too unpredictable for me
to piece back together before
the song is lost to the wind again.

This poem makes me think of how I get reminded of things sometimes, but I’ll always get caught on one part of the story and I never explore the full memory. Thank you for putting that into words.
I had nightmare music in my dreams as a child and even as an adult. It always proceeded and then accompanied anxiety and danger. How funny we link music to memory. Love the poem.
Memories in general can be fleeting, hard to nail down, but I do really get this in terms of memories of music. It’s like I’ve got a tune caught in the back of my throat. but it’s just not coming out. There’s a song Natalie Cole had back in the 80s, and I don’t seem to be able to find it. I LOVED that song.
