Freedom
Birds have it flitting from maple
to elm to spruce to rooftops
to fence posts no signs to keep
them out No HOA rules to keep
in the neighborhood No cliques
that exclude them on their daily
routes No speed limits Stop signs
No gossip or whispers when they arrive
no rules of punctuation

The way you celebrate the birds’ freedom by listing all the human rules they don’t have to follow is so clever and fun. That last line about ‘no rules of punctuation’ made me smile.
thanks- i was watching them in my backyard!
Everything leads to that sharp last line. Nice to see you throwing an elbow here.
thanks kevin
Well said, Linda. Limits blow for sure. What if we were birds?
yes those darn limits!
great
birds have their own rules
and they are not ours
so true!
LOVE THIS, Linda!!! “No rules of punctuation” was the perfect last line here. <3
Thanks!
Well done, Linda. We as humans have much to learn from birds and nature
You had me at birds. This poem soared! Enjoyed that the form and content complimented each other.
A fun poem that didn’t need a content warning.
“No speed limits Stop signs” echoes/inverts AC/DC lyrics (from “Highway to Hell”). Now that song’s stuck in my head. Maybe lean into that, like so:
Don’t Need Reason, Don’t Need Rhyme
Birds have freedom flitting from maple
to elm to spruce to rooftops
to fence posts no signs to keep
them out No HOA rules to keep
in the neighborhood No cliques
that exclude them on their daily
routes No speed limits Stop signs
No gossip or whispers when they arrive
no rules of punctuation to slow me down
thanks for your input and I unintentionally hit the content warning button!
also love your title suggestion!
You capture bird movement well. these words just pop: flitting from maple
to elm to spruce to rooftops
to fence posts
Fav line: no rules of punctuation
Love the contrast to human and Tom’s title suggestion.
