I might not see you later
some goodbyes linger
like peanut butter
no milk
cat food crumbles
scattered by the back door
the silence when I enter
some goodbyes disappear
like the way home
on the way home
the dentist I never liked
who crowned my tooth
with a misfit tiara
some goodbyes boomerang
like my kayak paddle
out to sea
discovering a new song
I would have shared
with you

This is really nice, makes my heart ache
Love so many lines, images here…and your use of verbs—chef’s kiss.
This carries great emotional weight well.
It begins and builds and end with a new song never to be sung…
Kat, I still haven’t gotten the taste of peanut butter out of my mouth. That last stanza is so devastating. Thank you for sharing.
