Salad Bowls
My mother loved salad bowls,
all shapes, sizes, textures, origins
made of woven wood, acacia,
mid-century designs with teak, smooth curves,
lathe turned, black walnut, red oak,
the treasured mahogany.
Porcelain with delicate flower blossoms,
vined ivy edging, trimmed in gold.
Fluted melamine with pressed folk art scenes.
Clay, earthenware heavy cylinders
with spattered blue glaze, sponged or brushed,
dripped or blown.
Most of her collection came from flea markets and yard sales.
I use a different salad bowl each time I prepare and relish a salad,
greens, endive, kale, red cabbage
cushion black olives dancing around the rim,
summer tomatoes with chopped basil and spearmint
soaked in stone milled oil dappled with memories of my mother.

Thank you. You are so right.
Delicious tribute.
The black olives are my favorite, though I do adore kale and red cabbage!
Awesome.

Thank you so much. Love those black olives.
Happy LexPoMo to you also.
Such wonderful imagery for so many different styles of salad bowls! I could picture each one distinctly. The addition of your own use and ingredient descriptions feel like magic. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much. It makes me happy that the images came through.

SENSORY DETAIL!!! This device shines in this poem. Dr. Damaris Hill, a professor at UKy, says writing (poetry or prose) comes alive with sensory detail. She’d love this poem, as do I. Thank you for sharing it!
Thanks so much. I appreciate that reference.
love how the details alone convey the feeling
