The Slough of Despond
I talk in my sleep
but being deaf
I write it down
to hear
I make a list
of what
exists
but right now don’t believe it
&
when a feller
don’t believe his list
of what
exists
there isn’t much to talk about

Great metaphor. Well said, Mike.
I especially like how the plainspoken “when a feller/ don’t believe” makes the feeling seem truer
I love this poem’s shape. It propels the sentiment. Great write!
written in a
language

Ha!
Love the reference to Pilgrim’s Progress. One of my earliest literary crushes.
even before huckleberry finn??
You and Frank James, the outlaw, have/had similar tastes in literature, Kevin…
Mike. I’m with you on this one.
Great humor in your despond.⁰
The logic of the ending
is impeccable!!!
Great choice for the word “slough”! (Although “despond” is not bad either!) You amaze me.
thank you all for your kind comments and for reading my poem
Mike, you are so brilliant. I love reading your work.
The fragmentation and restraint in this poem are superb. Very powerful piece!
Well rendered and concise.
