Daddy’s Photograph of Homes
Tachikawa Air Force Base, 1955
Off base there’s a bomb shelter
and an empty clothesline
partially covered with grass
five Japanese boys, three girls pose
on top of the curved roof
beyond a fence are barracks—
long, two-story structures
it has been ten years

Wonderful details, I can see the boys and girls, that partially covered quonset. That closing line haunts.

Yes a photo !!!
This is incredible.
Perfect. Love it 😀
upon further research, I must rewrite the first line.

I read this very early this morning and was so moved but could not say anything that would do it justice. I came back to thank you for this reminder of history. Your words surround the Quonset hut with intensity. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Virginia, very intense, especially now that I realize it was a bomb shelter.
Love the poem, Laverne. And like the rewrite of the first line.
Thanks, that good to know it works
You captured an image and a piece of history so smoothly.
That discovery really deepens the haunt of the picture!
Yes it does! and living so close as a child and I never knew.
Close to major historical events, yet right back to the moment with the children. Fine composition, you never let me down.
