Alternate Timeline
At Mississippi River Gorge between Minneapolis
& Saint Paul there’s a savanna with scattered
oak trees. Groundlayer of prairie grasses
& wildflowers. Off the walking trail, Jake O’ Reilly
& I found a wild, private patch. In this version
I wasn’t afraid of my body, so when he unzipped
his faded Levis I didn’t look away. My hair
tangled with coneflowers & black-eyed susans.
I embraced him feverishly, shut out the rest
of the world. In this version I smell him, taste him.
Jake got a steady job making sesame bagels.
In this version we made love several times a night.

The many ways we see a person
Especially since I ran away from him big-time and always regretted it.
Lush. Love the repeat “in this version” and especially love, “My hair/tangled with coneflowers & black-eyed susans.”
Isn’t it amazing what time and distance can do to a memory and to how we view ourselves and others? Your poem captures this so well.
regret reimagining the road not taken
captures the feeling
Wonderful, Linda! Makes me think about what REALLY happened…
In the real version…
😇
also, I love the multiple prepositional phrase buildup in the first stanza
Love the detail in this, and this line “Jake got a steady job making sesame bagels” which brings me back to the present.
So well done. Love the title and how it works with the repeat of “in this version.”
Finely crafted and love the form, Linda. You put me right in the scene
Your poems always ground us in atmosphere!
In this version, sensuality reigns. rules. reality has a hard time competing.
“making bagels” / “made love” – a lovely pairing!
