Walking
a butterfly
with tastebuds
with tastebuds
on its feet
chasing
first flight
first flight
to the imagination
echoing
a blue swallowtail
and a dandelion’s
echoing
a blue swallowtail
and a dandelion’s
wish to fly—just so
the wind blows
wobbling away

There is a lot of whimsy in this one! I especially liked the “and a dandelion’s/wish to fly–just so” lines.
I love the fact of “with tastebuds/on its feet” because it’s almost too unhuman to wrap one’s head around, but then you make their wishes relatable
I also love “with tastebuds/ on its feet.” I know butterflies have this, but it still puzzles the mind and draws me in!
I feel the delicacy and fragility
Exactly! Coleman, I love the soft effortlessness of this poem, which might itself blow away in the wind any minute.
What a beautiful poem. It feels light and airy.
“chasing
first flight
to the imagination”
