Along the Journey
Anniversaries aren’t just for the joys;
Life’s sorrows need remembering too.
Grief demands mile markers –
“She would have been 13 today.”
“This was the day of his surgery.”
“They would have been married for four years.”
“This was when the accident happened.”
Times to pause and reflect
On what was lost,
On who is gone…
On what remains,
On who is here.

Grief demands mile markers…beautiful. Sometimes they are internal markers only.
Thank you so much – when that line came to me I realized it’s power.
Powerful! Particularly the “on what…on who” repetition juxtaposed with “lost; gone/remains here
Thank you! I love playing with repetition and alliteration. The music of poems is often my favorite part.
Touching poem- yes grief demands markers!
I like your poem very much. I have read it a few times now. I brings me places, and I like how you end it, such as in “on what remains” as it allows me to breathe and open up there. Thank you for your poem.
I’m so glad this meant something to you. You may realize that the “mile markers” in the poem are specific ones to me, but so glad it resonated with you as well. That’s such a compliment that you’ve thought back on it more than once.
