At the time of closing the deceased’s eyes.
And the women cried
through the chanting in the mosque
the women with covered heads,
even the Americans,
they all cry under scarves
behind the screen
apart from their sons,
their lovers
their husbands
their fathers.
They cry – they cry,
they chant – they chant
the prayer for the dead
whom they mourn.
Holding hands
like each of them
were the widow,
holding hands
with themselves.

Beautifully sad…
Thanks so much. I went to my friend’s parents funerals (they did not die at the same time) many years ago at the Mosque. It was beautiful.
Holding hands
like each of them
were the widow,
holding hands
with themselves.
This is lovely, start to finish, but the end expresses such a profound sense of community. Beautiful.
Yes, the community. Thank you.
Felt deeply!
Thank you.
Cuts to the core: “their sons,/their lovers/their husbands/their fathers./They cry – they cry,”
It’s a widows dirge. The creening of us all.
