Canary
I can’t show you this,
but I’ll show you something else,
my canary in the coal mine of your heart.
You wouldn’t like this,
but you’ll probably like her
and won’t kill me so early in the morning.
My canary is yellow
but she’s not afraid of the dark.
I lower the rope and hope I hear her sing.

“coal mine of your heart,” eh? I also like the repetition of “can’t show you this,” “wouldn’t like this”
I love the image of a bright yellow canary singing in a dark coal mine, unafraid. I agree with Gaby, “my canary in the coal mine of your heart” is an iconic line!
A wonderful use of this metaphor!
This poem feels so heartbreaking and hopeful and crucial and expresses some potential of love while only really referencing the caution involved.
I’m curious why the subject of danger and riches will like your self protection. Will they see themselves in it?
Lots of hidden messages here…
Gorgeous, especially the ending.
Yes! The last line seals the deal!
Ah, the danger and hope of love!
Love the contrast of the yellow and the dark.
