Cycle in Darkness
It’s here, around us, within us, consuming us,
a tsunami of needless, preventable tragedy.
We offer thoughts and prayers, ritualized comforts,
to those who grieve, to the children who experience
terror in the classroom, to the shoppers, commuters,
celebrants, who fall to the gun. We deplore wanton
acts but withhold action, heed the drone of social
media and breaking news, let the outrage slip
from our communal conscience —
until the next assault weapon thunders.

Exactly what you said Mary! Needless preventable tragedy…. thanks for sharing this powerful poem.
Truly, this is a powerful poem, and a tragedy in itself that we keep moving on without making necessary change.
I couldn’t agree more!
Cycle in Darkness says it all! We’re like squirrels rattling a cage in an unlit room.
You express our collective anger and frustration quite well!
“let the outrage slip
from our communal conscience —
until…” There should be no until. Thank you for this poem.
You’ve captured the frustration we all feel! Well done, Mary!
Well expressed.
Yes, we seem impotent to do what clearly needs doing.
Yes!:
a tsunami of needless, preventable tragedy.
Perfectly stated
Perfect title
I love the storm metaphor at work here.
‘Let the outrage slip from our communal conscience’ yes this is what shakes the very earth we walk on blurry eyed with “I ME MINE” until it hits my people, my land, my face than maybe than it will become a WE ISSUE!!! Thank you for your words . . .
Oh, wow. Thank you for sharing this, Mary.
