Discoveries in the Night
Brightening spot,
she knew so quick, and
smiled with each easy knowledge:
Now sits too close to see well,
and cries at color monsters in the night.
Made mad poet,
he spent his days searching
for the last turnable phrase of worth,
and found it,
and smiled,
and died in that sleep.

1st stanza reminds me of my 6 y.o. g.daughter, taking little steps against her fear by sleeping with only a night light.
2nd stanza could be me or you dying
in the throes of a perfect phrase
and the way both stanzas are blended with “the Night”
This finds me looking into ancient history. Our oldest was 4, maybe 5, which would have been 1973 or 1974. I would have been 25 or 26 back then, after my tour in Vietnam and still afraid of dying.
