Fossil Find
Fossil Find
Interstate 5, Lost Hills, CA
Southbound, surrounded
by exotic bires far from water —
red-naped, purple-
headed, green-backed
plunging their identical
curved beaks earthward,
pecking
probing
ceaselessly for some
viscous substance not
visible for mere
mankind
its barreled
value
calculable
negotiable
ferric pterodactyls
rusting in place until
they crumble
beneath
an embered sun.

plunging their identical I can see this!
curved beaks earthward,
pecking
probing
A small note to my “admirers” – those creaky, rusting “birds” are actually oil rigs, sad to say. They were still searching for their prey when I was last in CA.
Just the same, I’m always happy to get responses to my poems, especially since it’s been such a long, un-poetic past few years. I’m so glad to be back among the creative folks here!
Brigid, Love this. Appreciate how you tie “fossil fuels” to modern extraction.
BTW – it is because of the class I did with you through OLLI (4 years ago??) that I have been participating in LexPoMo for several years.
Thank you.
