Georgia O’Keeffe’s Bear Lake, New Mexico, 1930
A tall, wide,
lifeless tree
debarked,
rises in
musky dark
like a beacon /
a silver-white
skeleton,
branches—
lightning
strikes /
arteries—
end in
pitchforks
/ claws.
The frame
lops off
the base &
crown—trunk
never begins
or ceases.

Oh !
Got me.
you made the poem as slyly threatening as O’Keefe’s painting
trunk
never begins
or ceases.
That snippet doubles as a stunning visual image and philosophical/cosmic meditation. So cool, Karen!
Love the image and form that matches the tree.
the visual aspects are striking
so well crafted from
beginning to end
Really nice ekphrasis.
I love how the poem looks and sounds. I also love the ending.
Ditto, Karen!!
I love that you provide the link to the image(!) and how you place your words like the towering tree itself. I enjoyed reading this all the way through! love it! and this especially:
“rises in
musky dark
like a beacon /
a silver-white
skeleton,”
Striking, Karen. I love O’Keeffe’s work.
